Welcome!!!
My name is Rica Young and this website demonstrates the best online teaching practices and skills I’ve learned from the @ONE Online Certification Program. I took the first course (Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning) at the beginning of the year with low expectations of learning new concepts but with eagerness to experience the journey. I am now completing the last course requirement (Practicum/Online Portfolio) and could not ask for a better way to end the year than acquiring that coveted @ONE Online Teaching Certificate! However, I realized that what I have earned from the classes and will be earning in this Practicum is more than just a certificate. My outlook at the end of this program is much different now than when I began. I did not only learn new concepts; I had a “paradigm shift”. I knew that teaching online was more than just converting on-campus course materials to digital format. What I didn’t know are specific strategies and techniques on how to effectively transform on-campus courses to online and the @ONE Program taught me exactly that! I am also more excited to continue the journey by applying what I’ve learned in every aspect of instruction not just online, building and participating in an online community of learners and staying abreast of new online technologies in education.
Currently, I work full-time at El Camino College as an Instructional Technologist for Distance Education. It is my duty to provide comprehensive support to faculty and students and assure effective implementation of online teaching and learning practices. I also work part-time at California State University, Long Beach and Cypress College as faculty. I teach on-campus classes for Critical Thinking using Computer Technology, Computer Technology for Education and Microsoft Outlook in a blended-learning/web-enhanced environment. Occasionally, I assist the Online Nursing Program at Pacific College with online learning technologies and services.
Because I am not teaching a fully-online class yet, the artifacts in this site are from my work as instructional technologist and on-campus classes as faculty. The artifacts are structured based on @ONE Standards for Quality Online Teaching and presented in five ways:
My reflections indicate the source and type of each artifact to ensure clarity. Some artifacts have sample work from students and some do not because (1) I do not have an online class and (2) the deadline for submission of the student work is after the last day of the Practicum. However, I will update the site with more student work samples when they become available.
I invite you to share my life-long passion and journey with education and technology. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. You may browse my artifacts by using the navigation menu on the left.

- A material I created as instructional technologist that can be used in an online class (e.g., online readiness assessment)
- A material I created as instructional technologist that demonstrates a skill in online teaching (e.g. captioned video)
- A material that I use in one of my on-campus classes as faculty that can be used if the class is offered in an online format (e.g. discussion using VoiceThread)
- A material that I use in one my on-campus classes as faculty and customized for use in an online delivery format (e.g. lecture slides with narration and instructor-video)
- A material that I do not have because I do not teach online but was created for a potential online class (e.g., syllabus)
