Online Syllabus
The Online Syllabus demonstrates the Standard 2 sub-standards below:
- Encourages interaction and cooperation among students, encourages active learning, provides prompt feedback, communicates high expectations, and respects diverse talents and learning styles.
- Establishes and maintains ongoing and frequent teacher-student interaction, and student-student interaction.
- Provides an online syllabus that defines objectives, concepts and learning outcomes in a clearly written, concise format.
- Provides an online syllabus that defines the terms of class interaction for both teacher and students, defines clear expectations for both teacher and students, defines the grading criteria, establishes inappropriate behavior criteria for both teacher and students, and explains the course organization to students.
- Gives students clear expectations about teacher response time.
Reflection
A recurring thought in the entire certification process is the "paradigm shift" from on-campus to online instruction. Learning outcomes maybe similar in both methods of delivery but facilitation and learning tools are quite different. Another material that does not exactly translate from on-campus to online is the syllabus. Certain information that should be explicit in an online syllabus are not relevant in an on-campus course syllabus and vice versa. These include Communication Policy, Time Commitment, Online Readiness Assessment and Technology Skills.
As an instructional technologist for distance education at El Camino College, I recently drafted an Online Course Syllabus Checklist that can be used by faculty when creating their own Online Course Syllabus. The document was reviewed by the Distance Education Advisory Committee and will be submitted to the Academic Senate for approval.
