Reflection
There are three means of communication in my on-campus classes. These are email, news item or announcement via the learning management system Desire2Learn (more popularly known on-campus as Beachboard) and the online room in BeachBoard powered by BlackBoard Collaborate. I intend to use the same means of communication in an online class with the addition of a Question and Answer (Q&A) discussion board for general topics that can benefit all students and eliminate redundant inquiries.
Before the @ONE Online Certification Program, my idea of class communication is email. After taking the @ONE courses, I've learned that there are different avenues of communication depending on the purpose and audience. For example, announcement boards and discussion forums are ideal for general topics addressed to the entire class. Email is the best vehicle for private, individual messages. Web Conferencing such as CCC Confer and Elluminate provides great functionality for virtual office hours, consultation and group meetings. I learned that Google Hangout is an option for virtual meetings and may be better than Skype because of its remote desktop (not share desktop) feature. I use it personally but professionally, I have yet to try the tool. Ning, Facebook and Twitter are other technologies that I look forward to using in class and if it were not for the @ONE class on social media, I would not have learned their educational potential and power. I am convinced that the more I reach out to my students using different communication media and tools, the better their chances are for success.
