logical fallacies
The Logical Fallacies Activities demonstrate the Standard 4 sub-standards below:
- Encourages collaboration and interaction among all students.
- Provides student-centered lessons and activities that are based on concepts of active learning and that are connected to real-world applications.
Reflection
Love is a Fallacy is a short narrative by Max Shulman. I use it in my Critical Thinking class to discuss common Logical Fallacies such as Hasty Generalization, Name Calling, Appeal to Pity, Bandwagon and False Analogy. I supplement the narrative with a short movie that illustrates the concepts in a real-world, college-based setting so that students can relate better. After the presentation, students are assigned to find a fallacious poster or video and post it to the Discussion Board. To promote interaction, they are also tasked to read/view the poster/video of two of their classmates and give a brief explanation why or why not it commits the fallacy they claim.
